Topic: No Ringing on My Regular Phones When Softphone is Running & Logged In

Account # 81925

For several weeks now, I've been noticing occasional failure of my phones to ring; sometimes they did... sometimes they didn't.

Within the last few days, I've finally isolated it to those occasions when my VOIP.COM softphone is running and logged into your system. As soon as I "Quit" the softphone application, my regular phones will ring when called. As soon as I start the softphone application again, the home phones fail to ring when called. I have checked this repeatedly over the course of the last week just to be certain, using my cellphone to test.

In summary, when the VOIP.COM softphone (Communicator v1.64) is running and logged into the VOIP.COM system, the softphone application on my PC will ring, but not my standard home phones. As soon as I kill the softphone application again, I can place another call from cellphone to homephone and VOILA! My phones start ringing!!!

Based on the number of posts I see regarding this issue, I have to assume you are aware of the problem. What I'm not sure you are aware of -- though you probably are -- is that having the softphone app up and running seems to clearly be the determining factor in whether or not the home phones will ring.

As you can imagine, this is a real nuisance, and I will be delighted when it gets resolved.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
Bob

Hi all,

This is EXACTLY what I have been reporting for weeks !

How many times do I need to repost this to get attention (at least to get an acknowlegement that a fix is being developped ?

Getting seriously disappointed !

I have been having exactly the same problem. I like this company's service but when there is a problem they are  EXTREMELY slow to respond.

Re: No Ringing on My Regular Phones When Softphone is Running & Logged In

Paul,

My Communicator phone calls are never routed to my house phone. They will go to the online voicemail. Then I have to check my e-mail to see if I have a voicemail.

You said you were about to give up and switch to another company, however, the forum hid the name. Do they offer a softphone?
I just wish the authors of Communicator would get on the stick and solve this problem. I am certain there are more than three of us having this problem. The sad part is, most of them probably don't even know it.

I'm pretty sure that Communicator is written by a third-party and not VOIP. I would think it is in VoIP's best interests to escalate the problem. They seem to disagree with that or they are not posting what they are doing.

Unless I can find an all-around better deal I may just switch to a speakerphone instead of the Communicator softphone. I like the soft phone because I am quadriplegic but can use a mouse. Dialing on a speakerphone may present a challenge (so what's new? Almost everything is a challenge anyway.)

The other thing I really need is enhanced 911 dialing. The VoIP system works pretty well with enhanced 911.  With Vonoge (you know who I mean) you dial an intermediary site which will forward the call to your local 911. Could add as much as 5 to 7 minutes to your 911 call. That's too long for me given my circumstances. Also, it is questionable if they provide a real softphone solution.

Re: No Ringing on My Regular Phones When Softphone is Running & Logged In

bobeham,
I have a ticket in to our development team to see what has changed recently that would cause the ATA not to ring while signed into communicator.  I see you are not running the new beta version of communicator, possibly you can try downloading newer version to see if this resolves the issue.

Re: No Ringing on My Regular Phones When Softphone is Running & Logged In

Hi Jeremy,

Still the same (after rebooting).

The pattern is VERY REPEATABLE:

On incoming calls:

1/ Softphone detects it and comes to the front (but does not ring on the speakers). The caller gets FOUR rings, then

2/ Ringing switches to the ATA and after THREE rings goes to voicemail.

My wife by now is fuming as we keep on missing calls (people typically hang up before SEVEN RINGS !)

Please help out as this is not sustainable !

Paul.

PS. When clicking the softphone  "DND", calls will go directly to the ATA but this is not a good workaround as I am using the softphone a LOT

Thanks for the suggestion, JeremyO, but no joy on this one.

I downloaded and installed 'Communicator_1_643b2.msi' and the behavior I'd experienced previously with v1.640 did not change.

Any help you can be in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated. Communicator is of no use to me whatsoever if it continues to disable the standard phones.

Thanks for your help-
Bob
