Topic: Continued "disconnect" problems....HT286 is the culprit
Moderators/Support,
We've had problems keeping the Grandstream HT286 connected since we originally signed up with VOIP.com. I'm continually (nearly every day...if I realize it's down that is) having to go thru the reboot process on all my devices, which is a REAL pain. I mean I can't trust that my kids are going to be able to call me from the house if there's a problem because this piece of junk is constantly going down. Every week or so I'm on the forums searching for a solution to my consistent disconnects. I work in IT and used to think I knew this stuff like the back of my hand, but this device is imminently frustrating.
I eventually ended up putting the HT286 on the DMZ so that my router wasn't part of the problem thinking the router and it's settings was the problem (not sure if that's recommended by VOIP.com or not).
But after nearly a year of this I finally determined the root cause for my woes, and, although I'm glad I finally found it, it's nothing I can fix permanently on my own. The HT286 phone line (CAT-3) port is flakey at best. I've tried no less than 5 different CAT-3 phone line cables and if I don't push them down into the HT286 hard and tape them down I don't get connection. And even then I can't be sure it won't come loose at some point and then the phone service is down again.
I don't think this is a common problem with this device (at least not that I can find here), but I could understand why. It's cheap. Really cheap. I may have saved a lot of money by using VOIP.com, but I've certainly paid for it, in excess, due the frustration and lack of service because of the cheap HT286.
Is there anything Voip.com can do for me?
Regardless, this is something for everyone else with repeat "no dial tone" problems to check into.....
Regards,
-Patrick
